Tarbela Dam was designed to store water from the Indus River for irrigation purposes, flood control, and the generation of hydroelectricity power. The construction of the dam was completed in 1976. The Tarbela dam is 143 meters high above sea level. Tarbela Lake is the reservoir of Tarbela Dam. The lake has a surface area of 250 square kilometers approximately.
The main objective of the Tarbela Dam was to supply water for irrigation by storing the flow of water during the monsoon season. The Tarbela dam has the capacity of generating 4,888 MW of hydroelectric power.
