The Khyber Pass is a mountain pass in the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan on the border with Afghanistan. The Khyber Pass connects the town of Landi Kotal to the Valley of Peshawar at Jamrud. Located at an elevation of 1,070 meters above sea level the pass is the main route between Pakistan and Afghanistan.
The Pass has been an important trade route between Central Asia and the Indian Subcontinent. The summit of the Khyber Pass is 5 kilometers inside Pakistan at Landi Kotal while the lowest point is 0.46 kilometers are located at Jamrud in the valley of Peshawar. The Khyber Pass is a part of Asian Highway 1 (AH1).
The local people of the pass are generally from the Afridi and Shinwar tribes of Pashtuns. The area between the pass is known as the tribal lands and is the place where tribal warlords ruled. The Khyber Pass has a long significant trade and invasion route. It is home to various historic battles. The Khyber Pass is one of the routes that was known as “The silk road”.
