MANTHAL BUDDHA ROCK: HOLY RELIC OF BUDDHISTS
Manthal Buddha rock dates back to the 8th century. It is a granite rock on which the picture of Buddha is carved. It is situated in Skardu town specifically in Manthal village. This rock is of great significance for the Buddhists and is considered an esteemed relic. In ancient times, before Islam arrived, Gilgit Baltistan used to be the home of a lot of Buddhists who used to carve images of Buddha on the pieces of rock.
This rock was not well-known until the 20th century when a Scottish traveler named Ella Christie discovered it and it became international news and gained a lot of attention. After which, the Government of Pakistan took necessary steps for its preservation. This isn’t one Buddhist monument that is preserved in Pakistan. Many others are located in Taxila up to Jalalabad.
