KHEWRA SALT MINE: A SALT WONDER
The Khewra Salt Mine located in Khewra in the subdivision of Jhelum District in Punjab, Pakistan is also called as Mayo Salt Mine. The Salt Mine is located in Potohar Plateau in the Salt Range. Often sold as Himalayan salt this mine is famous for pink Khewra salt production. Khewra Salt Mine is one of the major tourist destinations with 250,000 tourists each year. A mining engineer Dr.H.Warth constructed the main tunnel at ground level.
Pakistan Mineral Development Corporation took over this mine after independence. It is the largest salt producer source in the country. The annual production of salt is 350,000 tons per annum. The mine has a reserve of 82 million tons to 600 million tons of salt.
The Khewra Salt Mine has salt everywhere which can be a little boring for the tourists, but the administration has made the visit a little interesting by making monuments with salt bricks and decorating them with different lights. There is a ticket to visit the mine which is 220 Pakistani Rupees per head and for the students and children, it is 110 Pakistan Rupees. The place is certainly not like other tourist destination of the world, Khewra mine is full of information and history. The average cost for these hotels is 30 US Dollars. A visit to the Khewra Salt Mine will never go in vain you will certainly enjoy a lot there.
