KHUNJERAB PASS: BORDER BETWEEN TWO FRIENDLY COUNTRIES

Khunjerab Pass enjoys great tourist attraction as it is the highest border in the world between the two countries, Pakistan and China. It is a mountain pass located in the Karakoram Mountains. It is on the northern border of Pakistan specifically the Hunza Districts of Gilgit Baltistan and the southwest border of China. Its name is a combination of two words taken from the Wakhi language. “Khun” means blood whereas “jerab” means a waterway coming from a spring. Many of the tourists prefer to travel on their transport through the Karakoram highway, which itself is very fascinating and is said to be the best-paved road globally.

Khunjerab Pass is at an elevation of 16, 002 ft. The weather over here is cold even in summers, so it is advised to wear warm clothes although the view of the snow-capped mountain is so captivating that one starts loving the cold breezes as well. To reach here, travel through GT Road (N5) to Peshawar and you will arrive at Tool Plaza, after reaching Abbottabad Mor, take a turn towards your right to be on Karakoram Highway which will take you to Khunjerab Pass.

Khunjerab National Park is also located over here. It is recommended to take help from the drivers over there as they have a better understanding of the roads and also know how to safely drive in these mountainous regions. Due to heavy snowfall, this pass is closed for tourists from December till May. Accommodations nearby include Hotel Sarai Silk Route, Shisper View Hotel, Khunjerab Hotel & Restaurant, Gulmit Continental Hotel, etc. For an idea, the price rate of Hotel Sarai Silk Route is 28 US Dollars.
