SHANDUR PASS: ROOF OF THE WORLD
Located in between Ghizer District of Gilgit Baltistan and Chitral District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, Shandur Pass stands magnificently. Shandur Pass is also referred to as the ‘Roof of the world’. The top of Shandur Pass is located in Upper Chitral in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and can be crossed in April and November. Shandur Pass has a ground on the Shandur Top where the annual Shandur Polo Festival is inaugurated between the teams of Chitral District and Gilgit Baltistan province. Nearly seven matches are played in the three days festival.
Shandur Pass is a high mountain pass with an altitude of 12,200 ft. above sea level. The road leading to this pass is very long and rough. Drivers are especially advised to drive only in first or second gear. The road to reach the top of Shandur is very rough and narrow. Only one vehicle can pass at a time. People driving from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to Karakoram Highway uses the main route of Shandur Pass. The annual Polo tournament at the highest polo ground in the world takes place at Shandur, which remains the talk of the town.
